Well, the good reader says, who has trouble with this, after all? If so, could he be kidding? He is there, too. It was so damn hard to write well, too. In certain passages the writing has a studied, even pedantic posture, while in others it appears to move with the freest improvisation—until another re-reading makes these categories appear less stable.
How could it be? And there I stood in that pay phone booth, weeping along with this writer whom I had yet to meet, knowing how she felt from my own experience.
It was a Hemingway essay contest time since Nick had looked into a stream and seen trout. We all bear the necessary cross of being human, but it is ultimately our humanity that brings forth the writer in us.
Another few pages on, after he has lost the big one, we read: Nick presumably sleeps between the two parts. If not, then what can we make of Hemingway essay contest She made the competition the labor of love that it became from that moment forward.
He had never realized that before. Like it or not, writing will slip away from its official chores and dally with an excess of meaning.
Can we imagine Nick saying these words to himself? Yet that it can do so with relative impunity here might make us wonder where else it might be doing it without being noticed.

It was a hot day. Or not only idyllic. Try the narrator too. The text is quoting, the reader remembering. Writing is essentially about the human condition in all its variables, and no rule book can be put to the human condition and how it is expressed. You make a typo.
And I consider it my job to honor the talent of these writers—and if those who enter this competition are compelled to continue to write as a result of receiving the recognition they so deserve, then the world is enriched by their courage and their resounding words.
The language, not the narrator, tells us that Nick is not entering an idyllic fishing trip. By God, he was a big one. He felt like reading. And this, to me, is very sad indeed. He is really there, and this is no dream.
