Student should have already worked through content revisions before reaching the editing step. Is the language convincing, clear, and concise? Is the analysis free of faulty reasoning?
Is there a thesis sentence? Has the assignment been addressed? Have the two students sit in the middle of the class so that all students can see and hear them as they work through the peer-editing phase. Has the writer avoided insulting the reader?
They usually know to check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling, but other details are often seen as less important because of the high emphasis placed on these problems in their early education. Are the "who," "where," "why," "what," and "how" questions addressed?

While the students are working in groups, move from group to group to check their understanding of the editing process and use of the checklist. Has the writer used fresh language and a creative approach?

Have all quotations been checked against the original? Is the purpose of the essay clear? Has the writer checked for his or her particular pattern of error? To do this, first choose one student to model the self-editing phase.
Have students work in groups of two or three to edit one piece of writing. Have any potentially libelous statements been eliminated?
Organization Is there a clear introduction, body, and conclusion? Has the writer spell checked the essay? Is the tone of the essay appropriate? It is helpful to select a student who has a good understanding of the criteria on the rubric, such as proper grammar and punctuation.
Then have a volunteer fill out the peer-edit column so that all students can hear and view the process. Is the analysis based on hard evidence?
Does the essay move from general to specific? Is the title capitalized correctly? Has the writer used the correct margin and font?
Has the writer fully interpreted the findings? In other words, does the writer avoid introducing new material in the conclusion or switching subjects in the middle of a paragraph in the body?
After the self-edit is complete, discuss the process with the students. Please note that the revising stage precedes editing.
That student works through the items in the self-edit column as the other students observe. If necessary, are limitations clearly spelled out?
Is the overall organization murky or clean? Has the writer commented on each source used? If material was paraphrased, are the sources still mentioned?
